GRANT AND KARI FROM THE MYTHBUSTERS TEAM ARE COMING TO THE GULF COAST!

Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s STEMsmart Initiative To Present Free Event with TV Stars

They have invited a World Series champion pitcher to try to throw a needle through a piece of glass. They have analyzed whether or not people can really “smell fear.” They have even tested the “potty dance,” to see if wiggling and wriggling can actually quiet nature’s call. They are Grant Imahara and Kari Byron, members of Discovery Channel’s MythBusters team, and they are coming to Sarasota County on December 1 to share the cool side of science with students and others who snag a free ticket to this special event.

Imahara and Byron will be featured in a live discussion, presentation, and question-and-answer session on Saturday, December 1, at the North Port Performing Arts Center on the North Port High School campus. The event is presented by Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s STEMsmart initiative, a project to transform the way local students approach science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM. Although admission is complimentary, free tickets are required and must be reserved online at www.STEMsmart.org.

“For the past two years, STEMsmart students have been learning about all kinds of hands-on, high-tech opportunities that await them after graduation, many right here in our own region,” said Chris Pfahler, project manager of STEMsmart. “Seeing Kari and Grant from MythBusters face-to-face will raise their interest and excitement to a whole new level.”

Electronics and radio-control specialist Grant Imahara is a former animatronics engineer and model maker for George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic, where he worked on Hollywood blockbusters including Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. One of only a handful of official operators of Star Wars droid R2-D2, Imahara has another claim to beloved-character fame: he developed a custom circuit to cycle the Energizer Bunny’s arm beats and ears at a constant rate, and he has served as the Bunny’s driver and crew supervisor on numerous commercials. Imahara is author of the book Kickin’ Bot: An Illustrated Guide to Building Combat Robots, and his own machine is a former BattleBots champion.

Kari Byron is an artist, sculptor, and self-described “science chick” who says she has been training for her role on MythBusters since childhood, when she would use her little sister as well as her dolls as crash-test dummies for home experiments. Byron has worked as a model maker, toy prototyper, and for visual-effects studio M5 Industries. A strong presence in science-based reality TV, she brings a unique perspective to the MythBusters team as a working mom.

Gulf Coast’s STEMsmart initiative is a multiyear partnership with the Sarasota and Charlotte county school districts to transform the way students learn science and math and to prepare them for postsecondary STEM opportunities. The initiative has invested in new classroom technology, professional development for teachers, and hands-on learning opportunities such as science and math clubs, professional internships, and special events. The free public discussion with members of the MythBusters team is the first in a series of STEMsmart events planned through the rest of the school year, including a teacher summit in January and a weeklong celebration of STEM for students in March.
