Cat Hospital in partnership with Cat Depot will hold a One Day Special Microchip event on Saturday, January 26, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Cat Hospital of Sarasota, 3845 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, FL. Appointments must be made by calling 941-921-4040.

Take advantage of this generous opportunity and microchip chip your cat for only $20 per microchip. (Cats must be in carriers.)

Each year thousands of lost and abandoned animals are taken in by shelters across North America. The majority of these animals never make it home because they can’t be identified. Microchipping offers pet owners the only truly permanent method of identifying a pet and linking the animal back to their family. Collar tags can break or become unreadable and tattooing can become illegible. To improve your loved ones chances of getting home, microchip your pets.

A nonprofit 501(c) 3 no-kill, free-roaming facility, Cat Depot is dedicated to helping homeless animals. The state-of-the-art center is known for its advanced technology, commitment to achievement, and the latest in shelter medicine practices and innovative programs. Cat Depot’s mission is to save lives, find loving homes, and provide the resources and education to improve the destiny of homeless cats. Cat Depot is where compassion meets commitment.

Open seven days a week, come visit the more than 140 cats and kittens who are waiting for you. Shop in our Cat Depot Supply and Gift Store specializing in cat supplies and unique gifts. Open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Handicap accessible. Cat Depot is located at 2542 17th Street, Sarasota, FL, 34234. For more information, go to www.catdepot.org, or call 941.366.2404.

Friends of Selby Public Library hosts ‘Looking into the Crystal Ball’ fundraiser

No one can predict the future, but the Friends of Selby Public Library believe they can increase the odds for a brighter one when they host the third annual fundraiser, “Looking into the Crystal Ball,” 7 – 10 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Selby Public Library, 1331 1st Street.

The popular event has drawn hundreds of people over the last two years, resulting in rave reviews by those who enjoyed more than 30 performances by musicians, performance artists and belly dancers, as well as exhibits by artists and authors. While enjoying the entertainment and exhibits, guests also can sample tasty treats from some of Sarasota’s finest restaurants along with a full cash bar.

“Selby Library is a downtown institution that people love to support,” said Friends of Selby Public Library President Kenney DeCamp. “Not only is this event different from what you’d normally see in a public library, it’s also one of the most fun and unique events on Sarasota’s social scene. I’ve heard it called the People’s Gala!

Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased at the Friends of the Selby Public Library Bookstore or $25 on the evening of the event at the door.

The Friends of Selby Public Library provide support for materials, services and programs not covered by Sarasota County taxes. The all-volunteer group also operates the Friends of Selby Public Library Bookstore, underwrites enrichment programs and advocates for libraries at local, state and national levels.

For more information, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000, or visit www.sclibs.net.

BULLIED: What every parent, teacher and kid needs to know about ending the cycle of fear. JFCS presents author Carrie Goldman

As parents we seek to protect our children from being bullied and victimized. But how do you recognize and manage sibling bullying? Determine if peers are targeting your child? Teach kids the difference between tattling and reporting?

Carrie Goldman, author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know about Ending the Cycle of Fear will be the keynote speaker on Monday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Avenue. This event is sponsored by JFCS, Temple Beth Sholom and Goldie Feldman Academy.

Did you know that … 25% of kids have been bullied online? One in five teens has been bullied at school? Carrie’s presentation will help parents stay connected with their children; teach strategies to prevent cyber bullying; identify hidden influences on bullying in our culture; define the differences between normal social conflict and bullying; and steps to take with your school if your child is being bullied.

Carrie Goldman is a regular blogger for The Huffington Post, Chicago Now and Psychology Today. NPR, CNN Headline News, MSNBC, Yahoo.com and many other international news sites have featured her work.

To register for this special author event, contact Stacy Quaid at 941-366-2224, ext. 142 or by email squaid@jfcs-cares.org The cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple.
